Objective

Chapter 1

Given that "Under the Volcano" is considered to be semi-autobiographical of Lowry's own life, it is important to consider what influences his life may have had on the novel. The objective of this lesson is to learn more about Malcolm Lowry and how his life influenced "Under the Volcano."

Lesson

1) Begin class with a focusing exercise. Have students write for five minutes in response to the following prompt: Why is knowing information about the author important when reading a text? Collect their responses.

2) Class lecture: Lecture the class for 5-10 minutes with some information about Malcolm Lowry. Who was he? What is he known for? What was his life like? What places did he travel to (including Mexico)? What are the stories of his marriage (especially his first marriage that clearly comes up in the consul's relationship with Yvonne)?
