Krakauer's Prologue to "Under the Banner of Heaven" sets the factual basis for the Lafferty murders. To lay the foundation for the book, he uses Allen Lafferty's timeline of the day of the events. In this lesson, discuss the factual foundation in the Prologue.

Lesson

1) Data Collection: Ask the class to write the "Who? What? Where? When? Why? and How?" of the murders on the board, gathered from the information in the Prologue.

2) Class Discussion: What is the purpose of the prologue? So far, what have you gathered about the story? What do you make of Krakauer's writing style? How straightforward is he?
