Lesson 1 (from Down the River)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is to understand the people the reader has met in Under a White Sky: Down the River.
The reader has met various experts in their fields of engineering and biology. The author, Elizabeth Kolbert acts as both author and narrator, and introduces the people she meets in her work trying to understand the problems facing our planet and possible solutions.
Lesson
Class Discussion: Have the students answer the following questions: Who is the narrator of this Under a White Sky? What is the role of the narrator in this work of non-fiction? What people does the narrator introduce readers to? Why?
Small Group Activity: Split the students up into small groups and have them choose one of the people the reader has met in Down the River, besides the narrator. They should then answer the following questions: Which person have you...
