• In Chapter 1, Tyrell is a young Black teenage boy who picks up his girlfriend, Novisha, outside of her school at the end of the day.
• Tyrell thinks Novisha is acting strange when they go back to her apartment that she shares with her mother, Mrs. Jenkins.
• Mrs. Jenkins recently divorced Mr. Jenkins, Novisha's father, but Mrs. Jenkins still wants Mr. Jenkins to be around and be part of the family.
• Tyrell notices that Mr. Jenkins just seems to come around to the apartment to eat and have sex with Mrs. Jenkins.
• Novisha tells Tyrell that a boy at school has been giving her trouble, harassing her and asking her out relentlessly...
