Lesson 1 (from Section 1: "Introduction: The Raison d'Etre of Twilight in Delhi," and Part I, Chapters 1-5)
Objective
Students will explore background information related to the Introduction and setting of Twilight in Delhi.
Although the Introduction gives some background information important to understanding the novel, it presupposes at least some familiarity with Indian history. To fully appreciate the novel, students may need some more basic information about Indian history before reading the Introduction and beginning the story's text. This lesson is intended to give them that background information.
Lesson
Research Activity: Give students time to research "Mughal Empire," "Delhi Sultanate," "British East India Company," and "British Raj." Ask them to create a simple timeline that incorporates each of these four periods in Indian history and gives basic facts about each.
