Venator felt little remorse for them as he thought it was better that the twelve had died quickly than to have suffered years of misery in the mines of the Empire, living off of little. He thought they would prefer to die if they knew that they would spend the rest of their lives starving, only to be abandoned when they were too old to work.

2. Why was it so important that Venator got back to the ship?

It was so important that Venator got on the retreating ship because he was the keeper of the scroll which contained the list of artifacts. These artifacts were the history of civilizations lost to us, burned due to its contents of heathen gods. If Venator didn't get away, the information would be lost forever.
