Objective

Steinbeck spends some time musing about taking a journey. The objective of this lesson is to explore the psychological reasons involved in taking a trip.

Lesson

Lead the class in a discussion of wanderlust. Begin with a definition and ask the class to offer their feelings on the topic. Do they understand Steinbeck's feelings? Do they also feel like they want to be somewhere else all the time? How do the students address the personal yearnings of wanderlust? Do they feel like Steinbeck did, that he would never outgrow the need to travel? Do they think Steinbeck was wise in making the trip? Why or why not?

There are many good books on the topic of making personal journeys by taking road trips. Have the class select one of these books and read from it in class every day and compare and contrast it to Travels...
