Travels in Hyper Reality is a collection of essays written by Umberto Eco (born 1932), an Italian medievalist, semiotician, philosopher, literary critic, and novelist. Semiotics is the study of the signs, analogies, metaphors and symbols, and how they are formed through language, communication, and organization. Eco suggests that freedom of thought arises through understanding the signs that are being employed through various agencies. In this lesson, students are introduced to the book and will research its author, Umberto Eco.
