Anne says her parents are intellectuals and all their friends are intellectuals. Their attitude is that only the ignorant believe. Anne says she prayed at night because she knew someone was listening and that she always believed although she never told a soul.

Her parents host parties and Anne says it is common for someone to be necking with someone who is not his wife while his wife is in another room necking with someone else. When she tells her parents, they blame it on the alcohol as if that is an excuse. Anne says the children have easy access to alcohol and both alcohol and drug abuse is common.
