Raphael
This character discovers the leather bag that sets in motion the major events of the narrative. This character is 14 years old upon the novel's opening and he works as a dumpsite boy, searching through garbage each day in search of items that will bring enough money to feed himself and his family for one more day. This character has still retained his sense of childlike enthusiasm despite the blatantly bleak nature of his everyday existence lived among the mountains of garbage.
Gardo
This character is another one of the dumpsite boys at the center of the narrative. This character is calculating, tough, and thoughtful. This character is a practiced liar, a skill he has gleaned over the course of an incredibly difficult set of formative years spent working in the dumpsite of Behala. However, this character also has a conscience and is fiercely loyal to his friends.
