• Chapter 1 opens with the narrator, Gifty, remembering her mother lying in bed, suffering mental illness when Gifty was a young girl.
• Gifty recalls when she was sent to Ghana to stay with her aunt at age 11 and how her aunt pointed out a man whom she referred to as a “crazy person” (3).
• Gifty stayed with her aunt for three months while her mother was not well, and they attempted to sell knock-off handbags in the market.
• Gifty reflects on why her aunt pointed out the “crazy person” to her and wonders if she was thinking of her mother at home in Alabama.
• Chapter 2 flashes forward to Gifty as a college student getting a call from her mother’s pastor while working in her lab at Stanford.
