Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 36))
Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze Lukoff's descriptions of Bug's grief over Uncle Roderick's death in Part I. Uncle Roderick was like a father to Bug, whose own father died in a car accident right after her birth. Bug has such a strong connection with Uncle Roderick that even though he is in a hospice facility at the time of his death, Bug wakes in the middle of the night with the certainty that he has passed away - she can sense it. Indeed, the next morning she hears her mother Sabrina, Roderick's sister, crying on the phone with the news of his death. Uncle Roderick's death completely turns Bug's world inside out, to the point that even living in the old house they have all shared for many years feels entirely different and a bit wrong.
