Class Discussion: Begin a KWL (KWL: what I know; what I want to know; what I learned) chart for these three key themes. Use the small group activity and student responses to fill in what the students know and what they want to know. As the story progresses, students will fill in what they learn.
Homework: Compare and contrast Tom's life up to this point with the life of young boys and girls today. Use information from the text to support your response in a short essay.
