Lesson 1 (from Prologue – Chapter 3)
Objective
This lesson introduces students to the nonfiction book To Shake the Sleeping Self by Jedidiah Jenkins. Students will read the Prologue and will identify and discuss the book’s genre, structure, and narrative style. To Shake the Sleeping Self is a memoir written from the first-person perspective of Jenkins describing a journey that he took from central Oregon to Patagonia on bicycle at the age of 30. The author’s journey is not only a physical one—it is a journey of faith, sexuality, identity, and forgiveness.
