• To Shake the Sleeping Self is a memoir by Jedidiah Jenkins describing the author’s bicycle journey from the central Oregon coast to Patagonia. This almost 14,000-mile trek was driven by the author’s thirtieth birthday and his desires to come to terms with his life’s path, his identity, his religious background, and his sexuality.
• In the Prologue, titled “The Itch,” the author establishes some of his backstory and what inspired him to plan the journey. He opens, “I have learned this for certain: if discontent is your disease, travel is medicine. It resensitizes. It opens you up to see outside patterns you follow” (1).
