• Jim Prideaux arrives at Thursgood's School.
• Bill Roach, a student, introduces himself to Jim.
• The students at the all-boys school like Jim, but the gaps in Jim's resume bother Mr. Thursgood and he complains to the agency.
• George Smiley, who is separated from his wife, Ann, meets Roddy Martindale for dinner.
• At dinner, Martindale tells Smiley that Control, his old supervisor, is not dead and tells him about Percy Alleline, the new intelligence chief.
• Martindale knows somebody is running something in intelligence and suggests it is Smiley.
Chapter 3 | Chapter 4
• Angry at Martindale's prying, Smiley sells his house in London and buys a cottage in the countryside. He does not allow his wife to return.
• Guilliam breaks into Smiley's house to take him to Oliver Lacon's home, the senior adviser in the cabinet office.
• At Thursgood's, Bill Roach sees Jim steal mail from another teacher and notices...
