Objective

Objective: Chapter 1 Genre is a type and style of literature. The title itself of The Time Machine announces itself as an example of the science fiction genre. The author has used speculative elements in order to create a science fiction. The objective of this lesson is to learn about the science fiction genre.

1. For discussion: What is genre? What typifies "science fiction" as a genre? Are genres easily defined and/or, can a work be of two or even several different genres? What are some examples? What can you tell from the first few pages of this novel about its science fiction elements? Be specific. What elements do you see already in this book that you have experienced in other books, movies, or television shows that might be classified as science fiction.

2. In groups, ask students to specifically consider Chapter 1 and identify which genre elements they see...
