The Thunderhead
A nearly omnipresent, disembodied artificial intelligence, this character serves as something of a genius loci for the planet, although there are exceptions to its understanding and penetration. As the construct itself notes, it is, in effect, a deity, albeit one more active than many such depicted in literature.
Rowan Damisch / Scythe Lucifer
One of the novel’s protagonists, this character took the name of the fallen rebel angel of the Christian mythos. A failed apprentice, he works to eliminate the scythes he sees as corrupt before finding himself at the center of massive shifts in the political structures of the scythedom. He is also one of the few survivors of the fall of Endura.
