Objective
Students will analyze and discuss articles from various school shootings to contextualize the key action of the text.
In recent years, school shootings have become a terrifying and, unfortunately, rather common occurrence in American schools. In order for students to ground themselves in the main actions of the text, they will analyze and discuss the instances of school shootings in America to gain a deeper understanding of this phenomenon.
Lesson
Non-Fiction Close Reading: Students will read articles (provided by the teacher) about the Columbine, Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, and Parkland school shootings. They will look for the who, what, when, where, and why of each shooting. They will complete a graph that organizes the information from each school shooting.
Class Discussion: After reading the different articles, students will participate in a class discussion based on the following questions: What are the similarities and differences of each...
