Objective
Students will examine the purpose of science fiction.
Most students will be somewhat familiar with science fiction, and many will be fans of the genre. Relatively few, however, will have considered that as a genre it has a purpose beyond entertainment and speculation about the future. This lesson will offer students insight into the applicability of the themes of science fiction in our own time.
Lesson
Class Discussion: Ask students for some examples of science fiction with which they are familiar. How many science-fiction formats can they generate examples of? Do video games count? Comics? What are common plots in science fiction? What are some common settings? What exactly makes a work “science fiction”? How is it different from “fantasy”?
Small Group Discussion and Debrief: Divide students into groups of four to six. Ask that students choose for discussion a work or two of science fiction...
