Quotes
Give students a quote from one of the characters in the novel. Have students try to figure out who said it, and at what point in the novel.
Music
Have students try to find examples of music from the time period during which the novel is set. If time permits, try to play some of these samples in class.
Researching Poverty
Have students try to find articles, stories, poems, etc. that have to do with the subject of poverty in America. Each student should be prepared to share his or her findings with the class.
Poetry
Have each student select a character from the novel, and then write a poem from that character's point of view. The poem should contain enough identifying details that the reader of the poem is able to tell which character's point of view it was written from.
