Lesson 1 (from Map)
Objective
This lesson introduces students to the nonfiction book The Yellow House. Students will research the author and the book’s publication, read “Map,” and analyze the narrative style established in the opening of the work. This memoir, by Sarah Broom, details not only Broom’s personal life but also the history of her family and her hometown of New Orleans East, Louisiana. The book’s central themes explore how place and home inform and connect to one’s personal identity of self.
