Sarah M. Broom
This author of the memoir was born on New Year's Eve, 1979, and is the youngest of 12 children. She grew up in New Orleans East in what she calls the Yellow House before leaving the region for college and establishing her career in writing and communications.
Ivory Mae
This is the author's mother. She was born and raised in New Orleans by a single mother. After the death of her first husband, she remarried. She used her first husband's life insurance money to purchase her first home, the Yellow House, when she was just 19 years old.
Lolo
This was the author's grandmother. She was born in 1915 or 1916 and very little is documented of her early life. She was orphaned at a young age but her mentors in early adulthood instilled in her the desire to have a nice home and nice things.
