• Private John Bartle remembers when he and his friend Private Daniel Murphy (Murph) were in Al Tafar on the Nineveh plains in Iraq in September of 2004.
• In the spring his Army unit had patrolled the hills beyond the cities and towns.
• In the summer it seemed to Bartle that the war would go on forever.
• By September the war had killed thousands of civilians, whose bodies were found all over the city.
• By September, not quite 1,000 soldiers had died.
• Bartle and Murph did not want to be the 1,000th soldier to die.
• They and their fellow soldiers spent four days crawling along rooftops.
