Lesson 1 (from Part I (Prologue - Chapter 2))
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze the significance of the Numbers industry to the Black community in Detroit during Fannie's time running Numbers there. The Numbers allowed Black people a shot at getting ahead financially, and for runners like Fannie it allowed them to put some of their own profits back into supporting Black businesses and causes, like the local NAACP and other civil rights organizations.
