• This book is written from the first-person point of view and in a mix of the present and past tenses.
• In the Prologue, the author and narrator, Bridgett Davis, remembers being an elementary school student and hearing her mother, Fannie Davis, take people's bets over the telephone.
• In school, at first grade at Winterhalter Elementary School, Bridgett is in first grade and her teacher tells her with some disdain that she sure has a lot of shoes.
• Bridgett is made to feel that she has done something wrong. Her teacher, Miss Miller, asks her if she knows what her mother does for a living, but she lies and says she does not...
