Chapter One

-The Woman Next Door is a novel told from the third-person limited perspective. The narrator can relay the thoughts of the novel’s two protagonists: Hortensia James and Marion Agostino. The novel frequently alternates between the present and extensive flashback sequences.
-Chapter One begins with Hortensia going for a walk from her home in the luxurious South African suburb known as Katterijn to a nearby hill called the Koppie.
-As Hortensia walks, the narrator reflects on the woman’s present predicament: she is 85 years old and her husband, Peter, has been terminally ill for some time. Hortensia is eager for him to die.
-The narrator then turns to a flashback of when Hortensia first arrived in Katterijn, “an enclave of some forty houses within Cape Town...
