Lesson 1 (from "A Note About Witches" – "Summer Holidays")
Objective
The Witches is a fantasy children’s novel by best-selling author Roald Dahl with illustrations by Quentin Blake. The story is related from the first-person perspective of its unnamed protagonist, a seven-year-old boy who comes to live with his grandmother in Norway. The opening prologue to the novel is titled “A Note About Witches,” and in it the narrator establishes that this is not a “fairy tale” but a true story. This lesson introduces students to the author and his work. Students will read the prologue, research superstitions surrounding witches, examine the author, and discuss the narrative style established in “A Note About Witches.”
