Objective
The objective of this lesson is to examine the use of suspense in Chapters 1-9 of The Winners, and how Backman uses suspense. Suspense is an anxious state of mind that something may happen--usually something bad. Backman uses suspense during the storm and during Maya's walk through the park.

How does Backman increase the suspense of the situation with the man and his pregnant wife as more characters get involved with the situation and the storm worsens? What is suspenseful about the drive Ana makes to their car and then the drive to the hospital? How is suspense used to keep readers wondering about the baby and the mother and their survival?
