Lesson 1 (from Section 1: "The Windhover," lines 1-14)
Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is to explore aspects of Gerard Manley Hopkins's life and ideas relevant to a reading of "The Windhover." Hopkins was a Jesuit priest whose Christian theology informed much of his writing; the influence of these beliefs can be seen in "The Windhover." He was a devotee of the Ignatian practice of using the contemplation of nature to gain insights into the divine, which is precisely what the speaker of the poem is engaged in. Hopkins's literary ideas--particularly those about what he called "inscape" and "instress"--are also reflected in "The Windhover." This lesson acquaints students with background information on Hopkins that will prepare them for the ideas they will encounter in the poem.
