Lesson 1 (from Prologue - Chapter Three)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the exposition of the novel. Students will identify and analyze elements from the beginning of The Wife Between Us in order to identify the main characters, the setting, and any potential conflicts and themes the novel might contain.
The beginning of the novel introduces the reader to Vanessa and Nellie, although it is not yet clear to the reader that these two individuals are actually the same person. The reader is introduced to Richard and the setting of New York City. The reader is also introduced to themes involving love, obsession, and fear. Finally, readers are introduced to potential conflicts, such as Vanessa’s conflicts with Richard and with his new fiancée.
