Neil Spencer
At the opening of the novel, this six-year-old character is being stalked by an unknown predator. Soon after, later chapters reveal, this character goes missing while walking along the familiar route from his father's house to his mother's house. His father had been too drunk to drive him back to his mother's home that evening, but this character was accustomed to these circumstances and bid his father goodbye, before seemingly vanishing into thin air.

This character takes quite a long time to figure out that her son has not arrived at her house after his short walk from her ex-husband's home. When this character finally calls her ex-husband and then the police, nearly two hours have passed since the boy's disappearance. Many people in town are said to denigrate this character after her son goes missing, accusing her of negligence for letting her six-year-old son...
