Objective
The objective of this lesson is to examine the setting of the novel. The novel takes place in 1967-1968 in New York. Holling and his family live in a small town that is divided by religious affiliation.

Class Discussion: Where does the story take place? How does the author present the setting? Does the author use photographic details or present details through suggestion? What does the setting indicate about the various characters? What feelings or attitudes does the setting evoke for the characters? Is the setting a neutral background, not important to the novel, or does the setting take on the role of a character? Explain.
