Objective
The objective of this lesson is to discuss the lives of slaves like Hiram, and what is revealed about the inhumanity of bondage. Hiram is the son of a slave and a wealthy landowner. Though he is the landowner's son, he is a slave because of his mother's race and his skin color.

Class Discussion: What happened to Hiram's mother? What happened to other family members or friends? Who is Hiram's father? Why is Hiram a slave if his father is the owner of Lockless? How does Hiram have to serve Maynard? Does Hiram have a personal life? How is Hiram's life compared to the life of slaves in the fields? What does he suffer that slaves who live in the slave quarters do not? What do the slaves in the slave quarters suffer that Hiram does not? How does the overseer treat the slaves...
