Objective
The first two chapters introduce Sophie's character. The objective of this lesson is to examine Sophie's character, as she is introduced in the first part of the novel.
Lesson
1) As a class, read the first chapter and discuss it. What information does it give about the narrator? Why isn't the character named in the first chapter? Based on this chapter, what is important to the narrator? What characteristics does the narrator have?
2) Break students up into groups. Have each group read the second chapter of the novel. Based on Sophie's description of "three-sided Sophie," what is Sophie like? Why does she compare her traits to her family members? What does she value? Have groups share their ideas with the class for discussion.
3) Have each student write a short diary entry from Sophie's point of view. Have each student read his or her diary entry and explain...
