Objective

The objective of this lesson is to understand setting and how it relates to the book, why it is important and how an author sets up setting. The students should also be able to identify the setting in The Veldt and how the setting relates to the story, the plot and the characters.

Class Discussion: Could The Veldt had been set anywhere? Does the setting make this a unique story? How do the people in The Veldt 's differ from the students' world? How does the setting affect the characters? The plot? The themes? Why is the setting important? How can the setting be a metaphor? How does the setting affect the characters’ emotions? How does the conflict affect the setting?

Activity: Class debate. Students will debate the following statement: Setting is more important in some novels than in others.
