George Hadley
George Hadley is the main protagonist in the short story. The story is told from his perspective. He lives in a Happylife Home with his wife, Lydia, and their two children Peter and Wendy. Lately, his family has been discontent. This surprises him, initially, because has done everything to prevent unhappiness: everything mundane task is completed for himself, his wife and children, they have all that they could desire, and yet there is still a feeling of dissatisfaction.
Lydia Hadley
Lydia is George’s wife and Peter and Wendy’s mother. She is concerned that the nursery has been conjuring the African veldt – lions and hot grass, vultures and death – for too long.
