1. How does the theme of secrecy emerge within Roald Dahl's discussion of bearded men within Chapter 1, entitled Hairy Faces?

Dahl opens the novel by discussing men's beards and by saying that no one really knows what a bearded man looks like underneath his beard. He then suggests that perhaps this is the very reason that men grow beards in the first place; because "he'd rather you didn't know" (3) what he actually looks like. Thus, the theme of secrecy emerges in the first few sentences of the text.

2. How does Dahl encourage curiosity in his young reader within Chapter 1, entitled Hairy Faces?

Dahl uses a series of questions about bearded men to model for his young readers how to actively wonder about the world around them. After posing questions concerning the frequency of face-washing in the bearded community and other such queries, Dahl states at the end of the chapter that the next time the reader sees a bearded man on the street, perhaps he or she will "start wondering about some of these things" (3). In this way, Dahl encourages curiosity in his reader.
