1) Research: Read biographical information about Sarah Dessen. Where did Dessen grow up? Where was she educated? When did she begin writing? What jobs did she have before quitting to write full time?

2) Class Discussion: What inspired Dessen to write? When was her first novel published? How do her experiences in high school influence her writing? How does Dessen feel about her writing?

3) Partner Discussion: What genres does Dessen write? How many books has she written? Why does she keep writing YA books? Has she won any awards for her writing? What do critics say about her works? Have any of her books been made into movies?

4) Homework: use a biographical graphic organizer to discuss Sarah Dessen and her writing.
