Objective

The Time of the Hero is a novel by Peruvian author Mario Vargas Llosa. The novel relates a tale of murder: a squealing cadet must be silenced by a gang called the Circle. Employing multiple perspectives, The Time of the Hero explores themes of masculinity, adulthood, secrecy, and the military. In this lesson, students will research author Mario Vargas Llosa and will identify and analyze the setting and narrative style of Part One, Chapter 1 of the novel.
