Objective
Kent Haruf has received wide-spread recognition for his work, particularly the novels "The Tie That Binds" and Plainsong", and has a number of awards under his belt. This lesson discusses the author of the novel "The Tie That Binds", Kent Haruf.
Lesson
1) Library research: Have the students research the author, Kent Haruf. Explore the other works he has written, as well as his background. Take a look at interviews and reviews to gain information on his writing and where "The Tie That Binds" fits in with his other novels.
2) Presentation: Have students get into pairs and prepare a presentation, using their research on Haruf and his canon. Have each group read an excerpt from different novels or short stories written by Haruf during their presentation.
