Objective
Setting. England is at war with Napoleon's France and only a strong naval presence allows the empire to survive.
The objective of this lesson is to look at setting.
Lesson
1. Homework. Students will research Europe around the early 1800's, writing a paper on some finding in the research that interest the students and which are relevant to The Thirteen-Gun Salute.
2. Class discussion. Could this novel have been set anywhere? How do the settings make this a unique story? How does the settings differ from the where this class lives? How do the settings affect the characters? The plot? The themes? Why is the setting important?
3. Group work. In groups students will research a setting in the world at present, where the setting might be similar and discuss the ways in which the novel would have been different had it been in the researched setting.
