Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze the language and style Benjamin uses in the book. Written entirely from Suzy Swanson's point of view, Benjamin's language is clear and direct, and consistent with that of a 12-year-old girl's. Suzy also uses many scientific references to help explain her feelings or to make sense of things that have happened to her, indicating her love of and comfort with the subject.

Class Discussion: Who is Suzy Swanson? How would you describe Suzy's tone as she narrates the novel? Does Suzy use language and phrasing you feel is convincing for a 12-year-old? How does Suzy feel different from other 12 year-olds? What types of metaphors and other comparisons does Suzy frequently use?
