Section I: "Statue"
Chapter 1
• The following version of this book was used to create this Lesson Plan: Atwood, Margaret. The Testaments. Chatto & Windus, 2019.
• The first section of the novel is entitled “The Ardua Hall Holograph.”
• In this section, an unnamed female narrator describes a statue that was erected in her honor and placed “in a morose cluster of trees and shrubs beside the footpath running in front of Ardua Hall (3).
• The statue’s “eyes are fixed on some cosmic point of reference understood to represent [her] idealism, [her] unflinching commitment to duty, [and her] determination to move forward despite all obstacles” (3).
• The left hand of her statue holds the hand of a young girl, and her right hand is placed on the head of a young woman crouched beside her; behind her stands a Pearl Girl, a missionary.
