Lesson 1 (from Part I - The Akha Way 1988-1990)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is to analyze how author Lisa See uses everyday activities to introduce the main character and teach readers about the culture of the Akha people. Later in the novel, the main character leaves her village and is confronted by a new lifestyle in the outside world. The isolation of the village and traditional practices of the people are an important foundation for this plot point.

Class Discussion: How does Lisa See provide information about the characters in Chapter 1? How does the setting contribute to an understanding of the characters in the village? What activities does the author describe to aid the reader's understanding of the Akha culture? Why does Lisa See use everyday activities to provide setting and character information?
