Lesson 1 (from Prologue - Chapter 2)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to assess the character of Lale as portrayed by the clues given by the author. Many descriptions and clues are given as to what Lale is really like by his dress, his reasons for leaving his family, his thinking of the future, his hopes. More evidence to his character is given in the attitude towards Lale of the other men in the cattle car. Students will begin the book by determining what kind of man Lale is.

Discussion Questions: If you had to describe Lale in three words, what would they be? What traits do we know that Lale has? How do we know this? Is Lale a likable guy? Why or why not? How is Lale different from the other men in the train car? What jobs does Lale get? Why does he get these job...
