Objective
The Sympathizer, by Viet Thanh Nguyen, is the story of an unnamed Communist spy who flees to the United States after the Fall of Saigon with the General he has been assigned to spy on. Chapter 1 opens with the narrator writing his confession to the commandant from an isolation cell. Objectives for this lesson include researching Vietnamese history and the setting of the novel and identifying and discussing the narrative and language styles established in Chapter 1.
