The Narrator

This character is the protagonist of the novel, in which he writes his confession to his communist captors. He attended college in America and knows a great deal about the culture. He is also a communist spy.

Man

This character is a devoted communist. When the protagonist is captured and placed in a communist reeducation camp, it is eventually revealed that this character is the commissar.

Bon

This character is one of the protagonist's two best friends. These three characters became blood brothers in childhood. He is a loyal patriot of the Republic of Vietnam and is not aware that his friend is actually a communist spy.

The General

This character is exceedingly loyal to the Republic of Vietnam and leads a movement to reassemble his troops to go back to Vietnam and take their homeland back from the communists.
