Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 72, Chapters 1 - 7))
Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze Harris's descriptions of Prentiss's and Landry's first experiences as Freedmen, charting their transition from slavery to liberation. In Chapter 1, George Walker meets the brothers in the wood and immediately recognizes their struggle and desperation. Although the former slaves are "free," they have no money and no job opportunities, and they are living off the land as itinerants; they are homeless. Eventually when George offers Prentiss and Landry work, Prentiss reluctantly accepts his offer.
Lesson
Class Discussion: Who are Prentiss and Landry? Why are they living in the woods in Part I? What kind of prospects do they have has recently freed slaves?
Small Group Activity: Divide the class into small groups and ask each group to answer the following questions in a group writing exercise: How do people in Prentiss and Landry's town treat recently...
