Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1-6)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the author’s background and personal experiences and to examine how these experiences are reflected in the novel.
Lesson
Class Discussion: Who is the author of The Storyteller's Secret? What did she do before becoming a writer? How was the book received by the public? Has the she written any other books? How might the author’s background influence your own reading of the book?
Small Group Activity: Divide students into small groups and ask students to divide a page into three columns. Title one column "Biographic Details," another "Previously Published Works" and another "Awards." Have students assemble lists of as many items as they can find for each category. Regroup and ask students to share their facts. Write a list on the board so it is visible to all students.
